Songs with Soul

As a female singer-songwriter who has come to recording and releasing music in later life, Joy’s work is a unique exploration of the challenges and gifts of mid-life including caring roles and the empty nest, as well as universal themes of spirituality and the wonder of the natural world.

Conveyed in a voice that is both tender and powerful, her songs often touch and move.  Joy’s influences, including Joni Mitchell, Carol King, Suzanne Vega, Michelle Shocked and Laura Viers are evident in the strong melodies and intimate lyrics.   Her debut album 'Woman' was produced by Jake Skinner and features multi-instrumentalist Andrew Stuart-Buttle and drummer Fred Hills.

EP oVERVIEW AND TRACK BY TRACK DESCRIPTION

Joy’s debut EP ‘Woman’ was released on 22nd September 2025.  It brings together five distinctive singles into a unique collection songs united in their thoughtful, emotive lyrics and soaring melodies.  Exploring themes of change and life’s transitions, these songs dig deep into the essence of what it is to be alive and the challenges and rewards of living in the present moment. Some tracks will particularly speak to women in mid and later life, especially those with caring responsibilities or whose children are leaving home.  But there are resonances here for all new beginnings and threshold moments.

It was produced by Jake Skinner of Echopine Music (who has worked with Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Eurovision legend Sam Ryder, and Brit Award-winning violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy) with Fred Hills on drums (of the Fred Hills Trio and drummer for Ellie Ford amongst others) and multi-instrumentalist Andy Stuart-Buttle (who has supported Paul Weller, Ben Howard, and The Staves) on guitar, piano, organ, strings and backing vocals.

The title track ‘Woman’ is a heartfelt call to carers to make space for their own needs.  The sensitive backing vocals and engaging string counter melodies add depth and interest as this piano ballad unfolds. Listen and discover the story behind the song: /woman

Joni Mitchell fans will love ‘Full Circle', a homage to ‘The Circle Game’.  This time the protagonist is a woman and the song narrates their full life span rather than just the first 30 years. The guitar arrangement, and song structure echo Joni’s masterpiece, but the new melody, chord progression and lyrics bring a beauty all of their own. ‘Living in a Work of Art’ is a celebration of the joy, wonder and mystery of being alive. The sensitive and laid-back band arrangement including flute and recorder creates a unique and contemporary sound. Listen and discover the story behind the song:  /living-in-a-work-of-art

‘Faith’ is an invitation to let go and trust in the goodness of life.  The upbeat vibe will appeal to Americana fans and the addition of new melodies and instruments as the song develops creates a satisfying finale. Listen and discover the story behind the song: /faith

The final track ‘Blessings’ is parent’s love song to a young adult child stepping out into the world for the first time.  The simple arrangement of piano, guitar and strings leaves plenty of space for the beauty of the lyrical sentiment to sing out. BIO

Joy grew up in Hong Kong, Shoreham, York and Sunderland - an unusual cocktail of places that cultivated her breadth of perspective and compassion for those on the margins.  She always loved music and remembers being enchanted as a child when she heard the Carpenters' ‘Yesterday once more’ on the small radio in the kitchen.  Whenever the family visited her grandparents she would head straight for the piano and make up soundtracks to imaginary film scenes.

Although she enjoyed playing the recorder and later the flute at school, it never occurred to her that music could be a career. Instead she followed her passion for making a difference through work that spanned the fields of homelessness, overseas development, research and consultancy for voluntary organisations and, eventually, the creation of an innovative and widely used tool to enable and measure personal change called the Outcomes Star.  Her own personal development has also been an important thread. She studied with Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield to become a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher,  is a qualified Focusing Practitioner, and recently completed the Soul of Leadership with the Shalem Institute.

She had a few piano lessons as a teenager and taught herself guitar in her twenties in order to play along as she sang her favourite songs in her bedroom.  Then, to her great surprise, one day she found herself playing a song of her own.  From that point onwards song-writing became a precious hobby, providing a outlet for self-expression, healing and creativity in her busy life as a working mother.  Now that life has become more spacious, she is taking the opportunity to share her songs with a wider audience.
