songs with soul

Joy's songs explore what it is to be alive, relationships, spirituality and the wonder of the natural world.

As a woman who has come to recording and releasing music in later life, these themes are articulated very much through the female lens.  This gives her work a unique authenticity and resonance for the millions of older women whose experience can often be ignored or not seen as worthy of artistic expression.  There can’t be many songs out there that reference menopause, burn out or the empty nest.

These are songs to connect you with what most deeply matters, songs of joy and mystery and songs of love.  Not romantic love, but rather love for friends, family and even acquaintances, love of the world, and love of life.

Conveyed in a voice that is both tender and powerful and supported by piano, guitar, strings and beautiful harmonies, her songs often touch and move.  Joy’s 60’’s and 70’s influences including Joni Mitchell, Carol King and the Carpenters are evident in the strong melodies and intimate lyrics.   Other influences include Suzanne Vega, Michelle Shocked and Clive Gregson, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Laura Veirs.

Her debut EP ‘Woman’ brings together five unique songs which showcase her talent for story-telling and expression.  'Woman' was produced by Jake Skinner of Echopine Music (who has worked with Hot Chip, Eurovision legend Sam Ryder, and Brit Award-winning violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy) with Fred Hills on drums and Andy Stuart-Buttle (who has supported Paul Weller, Ben Howard, and The Staves) on guitar, piano, organ, strings and backing vocals.   The EP was released on 22nd September 2025.  Three of the tracks were commended in an internationl song-writing competition and the EP has been positively reviewed by Folk and Honey with tracks aired on Reverb Radio, Vintage Radio, Abbey 104 Future Hits Radio and Readifolk.
